Delhi (population 12 million) is many cities in one – a strategic rulership site for ancient East Indian empires, local Jat communities, Afghans, Turks, Mongols, the British, and finally the seat of power for Independent India, the city is a melting pot of cultures and living conditions. Medieval Old Delhi, built for 20,000 people and now housing about 2 million, continues to thrive alongside the wide shaded streets and white-washed bungalow suburbs of Delhi’s political elite, meanwhile sprawling middle-class and migrant worker suburbs ring the exclusive centre. Since so many dynasties built capitals here on the banks of the Yamuna, the city is rich in architectural history.

When the echo of the chisel faded, so did the world’s memory of the caves. Till the beginning of the 19th century, when a British hunting party discovered Ajanta,

and the glory of the caves went on show for the world to see. These caves contain not only remarkable sculptures but also very well preserved wall paintings, many still glowing with their original colours. They are truly legends in stone and tributes to man’s devotion and triumph over nature.
